Frame Management

May 15

Managing colonies means inspections. We look for the health of the colony, brood patterns and queen health.

If the queen isn’t robust, a colony can have a tough time thriving.
Bees build amazing things, but sometimes the build is off because foundation we supply isn’t perfect. When that happens what results is an organic spacing. Bee Space is the term that has designed what beekeepers use to keep things in order.

Labels on the frames allow us to remove, inspect and replace exactly the way they were maintaining beespace.
To help with that we use tape, markers and such. Since we are fortunate enough to have a 3d printer in-house, I went ahead and made sets for each medium. That way we can label and be flexible. Simple enough to use we slip them on and off to replace a frame when we do splits and maintenance.

First prints had a raised letter and were not big enough to fit over non-standard frames that found there way (from the very beginning of our time keeping bees). A couple of iterations and now we have what we think will be a helpful tool.
