SUMMARY:Spring Build Out
DESCRIPTION:Bees on a visit to outyard.\nSuffered losses and the only way to recover is to split and rebuild.\nWe were seeing pressure from the bees in the apiary and indications that they were starting to think about swarming. \nIn order to recoup out losses over the winter we did a split and temporarily relocated that colony to out family yard over in Bloomsbury about 10 miles away. \nAfter a spell they grew sufficiently and acclimated to their new situation that we packaged back up one evening and returned them back to our yard.

SUMMARY:Frame Management
DESCRIPTION:Managing colonies means inspections. We look for the health of the colony\, brood patterns and queen health. \nIf the queen isn’t robust\, a colony can have a tough time thriving.\nBees build amazing things\, but sometimes the build is off because foundation we supply isn’t perfect. When that happens what results is an organic spacing. Bee Space is the term that has designed what beekeepers use to keep things in order. \nLabels on the frames allow us to remove\, inspect and replace exactly the way they were maintaining beespace.\nTo help with that we use tape\, markers and such. Since we are fortunate enough to have a 3d printer in-house\, I went ahead and made sets for each medium. That way we can label and be flexible. Simple enough to use we slip them on and off to replace a frame when we do splits and maintenance. \nFirst prints had a raised letter and were not big enough to fit over non-standard frames that found there way (from the very beginning of our time keeping bees). A couple of iterations and now we have what we think will be a helpful tool.

SUMMARY:Late Summer Update

Removed Formic treatments as they were no longer viable and did what they were supposed to do. \nAlong the way we assessed colony health – all four good\, one just okay\, two average and one outstanding. \nSince the summer is winding down\, in order to thwart robbing\, we reinstalled the entrance reducers. \nThings are tucked in for now and we have a strong feeling that we will indeed be able to have a fall harvest! If you do not know\, this isn’t by any means a given. We consider it luck to have anything this type of year. \nFeeding is next\, but not until we determine that harvest and accomplish it. After that the season will wind down. This year we expect to put OA Vapor treatments after consolidating. That along with heavy feeding of 1:1 sugar solution should help us up the chances of overwintering. \nExcited to have a third super on the stack of Tigger. First time ever for that! The two boxes were so heavy it was all we had to take them off and put them back on for the work we had to do.
